Welcome to Grand Valley's SDS Chapter

We are a student organization that believes that working people should run both the economy and society democratically to meet human needs, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society, we fight for immediate changes that can help everyday people while also building our coalition to achieve more structural long-term change over time. GVSU Students for a Democratic Society works with regional organizers and advocacy groups, other organizations on campus and locally to meet our goals. We use a variety of tactics, from legislative work to direct action, to fight for reforms that empower working people.

We are a multi-issue organization fighting for:

  • The abolition of poverty

  • Affordable, humane housing for all

  • Universal Healthcare for all

  • Free Education: from pre-k to trade schools, college and beyond

  • Democracy in the workplace; all workers have the right to organize

  • Complete reproductive freedom in all forms

  • An end to racial, gender, and all other forms of oppression

  • An end to punitive justice and mass incarceration

  • An end to military intervention and police aggression

  • Democratic control over the environment to preserve the planet

And More! If any or all of these issues are important to you, please consider checking us out!

The Rose Thorn

Grand Valley State University is a place where people from all over the world come together to create, learn, innovate, and coexist. Despite this, our campus continues to lack a strong leftist presence that embraces the diversity of our campus and stands in the way of the university's money-driven priorities. As it is  located in Allendale, the Confederate capital of Michigan, Grand Valley is in need of media that is free from disinformation, xenophobia, and propaganda. This is where The Rose Thorn comes in.

A quarterly, easy-to-read, honest newsletter with the goal of educating and sparking conversation on leftism, community organizing, and solidarity. A variety of topics ranging from healthcare, to racial equity, to the climate crisis. Available as both physical copies and online copies. This newsletter is free for one main reason: we want this to be accessible for all those in the Grand Valley and Grand Rapids community.

All articles are written by leftists in the GVSU and Grand Rapids area. As we continue to produce The Rose Thorn, we hope for our readers to be more interested in community involvement and direct action efforts.
